Translating to "In the Sugarcane Field" in Reunionese Creole, “Dann karo kann” captures the essence of Reunion Island’s cultural and historical landscape. Evoking romantic rendezvous amidst sugarcane fields, emblematic of the island’s collective imagery. Beyond mere romanticism, the artwork delves into the island’s colonial past and economic reliance on sugarcane. The island’s history is deeply entwined with the legacy of slavery, with a significant portion of enslaved individuals originating from Madagascar, forging a cultural connection that resonates to this day. Indeed, “Dann karo kann” serves as an honest depiction of the island’s identity, where tales of love and the legacy of colonialism intersect amidst the sugarcane fields.”
Mahay Andrianaivoson (b. 2002 in Mahajanga, Madagascar) comes from a Malagasy and Creole background. She launched her artistic career in 2023 with her first exhibition “Manaranake” in Saint-Pierre, Reunion Island. Her paintings, which capture the Indian Ocean’s African islands’ youth, draw inspiration from the decolonial and liberation movement, with feminism as a major theme. Rooted in the fight against oppressive systems, she depicts the collective conscience formed by Afro-diasporic cultures in Eurocentric spaces.
